Profile & Story
La Garagista is a farm and winery in Barnard, Vermont. Flora is the fourth instalment in a collaborative oxidative wine project between La Garagista and La Montanuela, part of a series the pair call Lost Causes and Desperate Cases. It is Frontenac Gris from Les Carouges vineyard in Vergennes, a four-acre site on the Champlain Valley floor at 252 feet, on clay, limestone and shale, farmed by regenerative agriculture with biodynamic practices and forest-edge ecology. The wine is a solera begun in 2015: small amounts of each new vintage are blended into the mature wine, which aged under veil in glass demijohns before moving in 2021 into a hundred-year-old Amontillado barrel from the Jerez producer Cota 45. 15% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Handsome and robust oxidation, with layered herbal and botanical notes punctuated by underripe peach, mandarin peel, minerality and pronounced salinity. Very dry, textured, and nutty on the finish - in the winery's own words, not your grandmother's cream sherry.
Pairing Recommendation
Suggested with oysters, cured ham, and sweet peppers stuffed with tuna and capers.
