Profile & Story
Valdespino, founded in 1264 and now part of Grupo Estevez, is one of Jerez's oldest and most historic sherry houses, uniquely still fermenting its base wines in barrel and the only Jerez producer to bottle a single-vineyard sherry (from Pago Macharnudo). Contrabandista is built on Valdespino's Tio Diego Amontillado -- itself aged biologically under flor for eight years before an oxidative stage -- sweetened with roughly 5% Pedro Ximenez to a medium-dry style, averaging about 10 years total age.
Tasting Notes
Concentrated and complex, with toasted hazelnut and burnt honey over a base of nutty Amontillado character, lifted by a touch of dark treacle from the Pedro Ximenez addition. Smooth and full-flavored on the palate with real personality.
