Kir-Yianni was founded in 1997 by Yiannis Boutaris, who left his family's larger Boutari wine group to focus on a smaller, quality-driven project; the estate's vineyards, however, trace back to 1970, when the Boutaris family first planted Xinomavro on the eastern foothills of Mount Vermio near Naoussa. Today the winery, led by Stelios Boutaris, farms across both Naoussa and Amyndeon on the western side of the mountain and is regarded as one of Greece's leading exponents of the Xinomavro variety.
