Profile & Story
Monte Rio Cellars is the project of Patrick Cappiello, a veteran sommelier and restaurant wine director (including a stint as Wine Director at Tribeca Grill and Food & Wine's Sommelier of the Year in 2014) who turned to winemaking in 2018, focusing on heritage California varieties from Lodi and old-vine sites farmed organically and made without additives. This Angelica, a traditional Californian fortified style dating to the Spanish mission era, is made from 80% Mission grapes from the Somers Vineyard and 20% Flame Tokay from the century-old Old School Vineyard, fortified with brandy added to the unfermented Mission juice.
Tasting Notes
Reminiscent of a fine tawny port, with complex notes of fig, coffee liqueur and raisin, ending in a long, rich finish of toffee and caramel.
