Cartuxa takes its name from the Cartuxa Monastery in Évora, where Carthusian monks have lived in silence and prayer since 1598. The winery is owned by the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, a private charity founded in 1963, and the wine was first produced in 1986. The 2022 red is a DOC Alentejo Évora blend of Alicante Bouschet, Trincadeira and Aragonez from the Foundation's vineyards on granitic and schistous soils. The grapes are de-stemmed, gently crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by extended maceration, 12 months of maturation in vats and barrels, and 24 months in bottle before release. 14% ABV.
