Profile & Story

Red Schooner is the project of Charlie Wagner, elder son of Caymus Vineyards founder Chuck Wagner, built around Malbec grown high in Argentina's Andes Mountains. The grapes are picked, chilled near freezing, and shipped by ocean voyage to the Wagner family's Rutherford, Napa Valley facility, where the wine is finished in the rich, supple Caymus house style. Rather than a vintage date, each release is labeled by its 'Voyage' number, marking the literal sea journey the fruit made; Voyage 12 corresponds to the 2022 harvest. The wine is aged in French oak and blended to be dense, dark and velvety.

Tasting Notes

Ripe plum and dark cherry meet cocoa powder and toasted oak in a dense, velvety glass, the fruit riding on the silky, low-acid frame Malbec is known for. Restaurant's Notes: Dark cherry, blackberry compote, vanilla bean, mocha, sweet spice; velvety and generous with a smooth, rounded finish.

Pairing Recommendation

A natural match for grilled skirt steak or carne asada, where its plush tannins and dark fruit stand up to smoky char and chimichurri.
