Profile & Story
Le Vieux Donjon was founded by Marcel Michel, who began estate-bottling in 1966, and built up by his son Lucien and daughter-in-law Marie-José Michel from 1979; today it is run by their children Claire Fabre-Michel and François Michel. The 15–17 hectare domaine makes just one red and one white Châteauneuf-du-Pape each year from vines that are in part over a century old, blending Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, aged in large neutral oak foudres.
Tasting Notes
Bright red and black cherry fruit with a savory, garrigue-scented edge and fine, well-integrated tannins. Restaurant's Notes: Kirsch, raspberry, plum, garrigue, white pepper, licorice; supple and spicy with fine tannins and a warm finish.
Pairing Recommendation
Excellent with roasted game birds or a peppercorn-crusted steak.
