Profile & Story

Monte Xanic, founded in 1987 in Valle de Guadalupe, first produced its flagship 'Gran Ricardo' in 1994 as a tribute to co-founder Ricardo Hojel; the wine draws on fruit from the Valle de Guadalupe and Valle de Ojos Negros. It is a Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec (proportions vary slightly by vintage), hand-harvested and hand-sorted, given a five-day cold soak, and aged 18 months in new French oak. In 2021 Gran Ricardo became the best-selling ultra-premium wine in Mexico, the first Mexican wine to lead that category, and it is regarded as one of the country's most age-worthy reds (25+ years).

Tasting Notes

Precise and powerful, Monte Xanic's flagship red shows dark currant and cedar wrapped in firm, age-worthy structure. Restaurant's Notes: Blackcurrant, black cherry, cedar, graphite, and dark chocolate; structured and age-worthy.

Pairing Recommendation

Excellent with grilled ribeye, mole negro, or aged Oaxacan cheese.
