Santos Brujos Tempranillo/Grenache

Profile & Story

Santos Brujos is the flagship red of Vinas del Sol, a small biodynamic winery founded in 2008 by Sergio Salgado in the El Porvenir area of Mexico's Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California, and the first winery in the country to earn Demeter biodynamic certification. The estate farms its vineyards at roughly 900 feet elevation on clay and sandy, quartz-rich soils, with vines arranged in an unconventional Fibonacci-spiral layout, and produces only about 2,000 cases a year under winemaker Emiliano Cruz. The wine is built around estate Tempranillo aged around 12 months in French oak at about 13.5% ABV, showing an intense, brilliant cherry-red color with floral, red-fruit and herbal aromatics of plum, black cherry and freshly cut grass, finishing with vanilla, tobacco and roasted coffee notes.

Pairing Recommendation

Pairs naturally with grilled meats and moderately spiced Mexican fare, such as al pastor or chile-rubbed steak, where its ripe fruit and soft tannins balance the char and spice.
