Profile & Story
Caleb Leisure Wines is a one-person natural wine project based in Cloverdale, California. Caleb farms about a third of his fruit himself on organic and permaculture principles and sources the rest from the Sierra Foothills and the North Coast, regions whose old vines and warm days suit the long skin contact his vessels encourage. Ahead of the 2017 vintage he imported ten Georgian qvevri and buried them in the earthen floor of his cellar; he remains one of the only California vintners fermenting in authentic Georgian qvevri. Cedilla 2023 is a macerated Friulano from a tiny vineyard neighbouring Sumu Kaw in the Sierra Foothills, and this lot stayed on its skins for the length of the ferment, a nod to some of the great examples out of Friuli, Italy.

Offered only as a typicity guide, and not as a note on this bottle: a Friulano fermented on its skins for the length of the ferment in qvevri typically shows a burnished gold to light amber colour, dried pear and orange peel, almond skin and dried herbs, with a light chalky tannic grip and a bitter-savoury finish.
