Profile & Story
Caravaglio is a certified-organic estate on Salina, in Sicily's Aeolian Islands (a UNESCO World Heritage site), farmed by Nino Caravaglio with hands-on, low-intervention methods built around spontaneous fermentation and respect for the archipelago's volcanic terroir. Their Malvasia delle Lipari Passito, a DOC white dessert wine, comes from the Malfa and Valdichiesa vineyards on Salina at altitudes between 50 and 350 meters on volcanic soil, from a blend of 95% Malvasia di Lipari and 5% Corinto Nero. The hand-harvested grapes are dried outdoors on traditional woven cane racks (cannizzi) for about 20 days, then spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts, aged 9 months in steel, and further refined in bottle before release.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant amber in color, the wine offers an exuberant bouquet of dried fig, date, apricot, aromatic herbs, eucalyptus, and ginger. It is sweet, carried by an elegant freshness that keeps it from ever feeling cloying.
