Profile & Story
Château Prost is a historic Sauternes property in Bordeaux, part of the Perromat family's Vignobles Perromat holdings alongside the neighboring Château Nairac and Château Luziès. Known as Montalis as far back as 1602 under Mathurin Baudoin, lord of the noble houses of Bosc, Luziès, and Montalis, the estate was purchased after the French Revolution by a Mr. Prost, who renamed it after himself, before passing to the Boireau family for over a century and a half. Jean Perromat, who had inherited neighboring Château Luziès, acquired Château Prost and its vineyard in 1965. The vineyard lies on an old terrace near the parish church overlooking the Garonne, and in 1855 Édouard Féret's classic study of Bordeaux and its wines classified Prost (then still Montalis) as a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. The estate's Sauternes is built from a traditional blend of Sémillon (75%), Sauvignon Blanc (20%), and Muscadelle (5%).
Tasting Notes
Expect a classic Sauternes profile: deep gold in the glass, with the richness of noble rot layering honeyed apricot, candied citrus peel, and orange marmalade over a backbone of bright acidity that keeps the wine from feeling heavy despite its concentrated sweetness.
Pairing Recommendation
A traditional partner for foie gras and blue-veined cheeses such as Roquefort, and equally satisfying alongside fruit tarts or crème brûlée.
