Klinker Brick Winery was founded in Lodi, California in 2000 by fifth-generation grape growers Steve and Lori Felten, whose family traces its roots through Germany and Russia to the American Midwest before settling in Lodi, where they first grew watermelons before discovering the region's gift for premium winegrapes. The winery takes its name from the dense, durable klinker bricks that built many of Lodi's historic structures, reflecting the family's commitment to wines made to endure. This flagship Old Vine Zinfandel is blended each vintage from sixteen Zinfandel vineyards in Lodi's Mokelumne River AVA ranging from 58 to nearly 126 years old, including century-old blocks such as the Costa Vineyard (planted 1900) and the own-rooted Marisa Vineyard (planted 1928), combining the bright character of younger vines with the savory depth of the oldest plantings. The wine matures for 15 months in American oak.
Tasting Notes
Cooling Delta breezes and fog help the fruit retain above-average acidity, giving notes of dark cherry and spice, while barrel fermentation lends additional structure to this thin-skinned varietal. The extremely low yields of the century-old vineyard blocks contribute raspberry and cranberry character with a hint of black pepper, producing a wine that is balanced and complex.
