Maynard's is a Port wine brand produced today by Barão de Vilar – Vinhos, S.A., a Douro-based Port house whose portfolio spans Ruby, Tawny, White, Rosé, Late Bottled Vintage, Colheita and Vintage styles. The Douro Valley, the wines' place of origin, is the world's oldest demarcated wine region, its steep, terraced schist vineyards along the Douro River yielding the indigenous grape varieties, such as Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, that give Port its concentration and structure. Maynard's aged Tawny range spans from 10 up to 80 years old, reflecting long, patient cask-ageing. This 40 Years Old expression sits at the top end of that aged Tawny style: a very old Tawny Port in which decades of slow, oxidative ageing in wood are typical of concentrating the wine and developing the nutty, dried-fruit, spice and caramelised character associated with extra-aged Tawny Port.
