In 1930, at just 28 years old, Baron Philippe de Rothschild — owner of Château Mouton Rothschild — created Mouton Cadet with a free, pioneering spirit, blending grapes from multiple Bordeaux terroirs rather than relying on a single estate, in order to bring the quality of Bordeaux wine to a wider audience; the name "Cadet," French for "younger son," reflected his own place in the family. Through the 1950s the brand built its reputation on prestigious restaurant wine lists before expanding into Britain and America. This bottling is from the Sélection range's Haut-Médoc appellation wine, HVE (High Environmental Value) certified, blending Merlot for fruit and roundness with Cabernet Sauvignon for power and structure; note that the official source describes the Sélection Haut-Médoc generally and may not be specific to this exact vintage bottling.
Tasting Notes
Purple in color with a garnet hue, the wine offers succulent ripe red fruit aromas that, after airing, mingle with delicate touches of vanilla. The palate opens with red fruit, moves through black berry flavors at mid-palate, and finishes with red and black fruit notes mingled with subtle touches of mocha, dense and refined. The wine matures for 16 months in total, including 8-10 months in oak.

Recommended with venison steak and butternut squash, served at 15-17°C.
