Mulassano Vermouth Extra Dry NV
NV, Turin, Piedmont, Italy
Profile & Story
Mulassano vermouth was born in 1879 from a partnership between Amilcare Mulassano (owner of Turin's historic Caffè Mulassano, founded 1879 and birthplace of the tramezzino) and master distiller Pietro Bordiga. Today Bordiga still produces the vermouth using the same unchanged methods, hand-gathering many of the 30 botanicals — including gentian root and flowers — from the foothills of the Alps, with each botanical macerated separately in alcohol before blending with a Piedmontese Cortese/Moscato base wine. ~18% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw color. Nose of fresh herbs, citrus zest, white flowers, and a hint of green apple; botanicals include wormwood, lemon, coriander, marjoram, fennel, quinine, cardamom, and vanilla. Herbal-forward palate with balanced light sweetness on a dry finish — gentian-driven, with dried orange zest, unripe apple, lychee, and bitter almond.
Pairing Recommendation
Classic aperitivo — Martini and Negroni; served chilled with olives, salted almonds, and light antipasti.
