Profile & Story
The Rare Wine Co. Historic Series was launched in 2002 by Mannie Berk to reconnect America with its 18th- and 19th-century love affair with Madeira — each bottling named after a U.S. port city where a particular Madeira style was once preferred. Savannah was one of America's great "Madeira cities," and the wines that entered its port depended heavily on Verdelho for their character. Blender Ricardo Freitas of Vinhos Barbeito crafted the Savannah Verdelho (released April 2010) using small lots of old wines — some 50–60 years old — to deliver the complexity of vintage Madeira at an accessible price. 100% Verdelho. ~19–20% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Bouquet of orange zest and buttery shortbread with hints of ginger, milk chocolate, and almonds. Lightly sweet with zesty acidity that keeps it fresh; the palate reveals candied citrus, ginger, and spicy honey, finishing with a refreshing, palate-cleansing blend of spiciness and citrus sweetness.
Pairing Recommendation
Excellent as an aperitif; pairs with hard and aged cheeses, almonds and dried fruits, foie gras, lighter desserts (shortbread, citrus tart, ginger cake), and cheese courses.
